The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, which means "to join" or "to yoke". Yoga is a discipline, not a religion, aimed at training the consciousness for a state of spiritual insight and tranquility. A system of exercises practiced as part of this discipline promotes control of the body and mind.
In the yogic way of thinking, there exists three qualities of consciousness: Rajas - a state of excessive mental activity, Tamas - a state of insufficient mental activity, and Sattva - a state of mental equilibrium in which the mind can discriminate accurately.
