The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit word yuj, which means "to join" or "to yoke". Yoga is a discipline, not a religion, aimed at training the consciousness for a state of spiritual insight and tranquility. A system of exercises practiced as part of this discipline promotes control of the body and mind.
In the yogic way of thinking, there exists three qualities of consciousness: Rajas - a state of excessive mental activity, predominately expressed as action and passion Tamas - a state of inactivity, predominately expressed as ignorance and inertia, and Sattva - a state of mental clarity, purity and understanding predominately expressed as selfless service.
